Here is the back part of the basilica, you can see the dome that makes it famous. It is one of the 5th largest domes in the world. The outside of the dome is 250 feet tall and weighs 4 million pounds. Pg 6 This side of the basilicas block is made of Ohio Sandstone. (Tour Guide) On top in the front is a statue of St. Josaphat the Patron of the Basilica which it is named after. He was born in 1580s in a Lithuanian province of the Polish Kingdom. He moved to a Basilian Monastery of the Holy Trinity in 1598. In 1609 he became an Ordained priest. He was canonized on June 29,1867 because of his martyrdom when he was killed by an angry mob while he was trying to unite Orthodox Christian and Catholics. There are eight angels representing the nine divisions of angel, the 9th is above the sanctuary in front of the basilica. The ovals are the prophets from the Old Testament who foretold the Messiah. The Madonna windows are Eastern European shrines of Blessed Virgin Mary.
