The gun on the far left is a Matchlock Musket from about 1650. This is a .75 caliber musket that was used in Newtowne, Massachusetts. It the stock Newtowne is branded on it the town started in 1631. In September 1634 the court ordered that all muskets should be divided to have Armes in readiness for an attack at all times. The gun to the right is a Brown Bess Musket made by Edward Jordan of Birmingham, England in 1746. The gun is a ,60 caliber, lock plate. Pic 1 The gun on the right is an American long rife a .54 caliber gun. This is an early long rifle from 1760 the gun is like a German Jaeger rife. Pic 1 In the bottom right hand corner is a powder horn. It has Robart Holmes Ft. Edward 1758 used in French and Indian War. During this time they used cattle horns to store gunpowder to keep dry. It was also easy to customize and carve there names in them The red vest is Adam Stephen’s Waistcoat and Gorget. The uniform was worn by Lieutenant Colonel Adam Stephen he was George Washington second in command of Virginia Regiment. Its made from red wool with gold lace with gilt brass gorget that has initials GR for King George. The gorget is a symbol of rank. The Virginia Regiment was in Western Pennsylvania from 1754-1789. Braddock Pistol Above the the red vest is a Braddock Pistol a English flintlock pistol a ,71 caliber made by English gunmaker William Gabbitas. It has the initials of E.B. for Edward Braddock. General Edward Braddock gave this pistol to George Washington in 1777. To the far left there is a war club from 1800. It is a carved wood ball-headed club made by Iroquois. Musket and Bayonet The gun on the left is a British Short Land Pattern musket with a socket bayonet. This gun was the standard issue to the British soldier at this time. The gun fired lead balls the size of a quarter and was very inaccurate. They were nickname Brown Bees because the gun was brown and with the bayonet for close fighting wit was like a bee. Committee of Safey Musket During the time of American Revolution there was committee of safety which was the early state governments that made plans to protect people. This gun was copied from a British King’s Arms Musket. Washington Painting This oil and caves painting from 1790 is of George Washington in his military uniform. It his a gold leaf wooden frame. It was painted by Charles Peale Polk. The background is Princeton, New Jersey. George Washington Epaulettes This are George Washington Epaulettes which were wore by officers in Continental Army. They are made with gold bullion thread with gilt sequins and twisted bullion bows. There is also metallic yarn and wool lining. George Washington Uniform This is George Washington Uniform that he wore from 1789 to his death. The waistcoat and breeches are the same buff wool with gilt buttons. This was the uniform that he wore after the Revolutionary War in some paintings of him. None of his Revolutionary War uniforms survived. George Washington Camp Chest This chest was used by George Washington when he had to camp. It is made for pine covered in leather. The inside has green wool fabric. It has iron hinges, facings and handles. The chest will hold cooking stove, folding pots, utensils, plates, platters, bottles. This is one of three chest that George Washington had owned. Iron Fife This fife was found at Red Bank battleground in New Jersey in 1880. A fife is a smaller transverse flue that is tuned to B flat. There is 6 holes to make different sounds. The rife and drum were important to soldiers. The music would, wake them up, attend drill, eat meals, get paid, keep cadence when marching. The drum was used during battle to helped carry commands with all the other noises the drum noise would still be heard. Music also helped the troops relax at night. Surgeon’s Bloodletting Set The bloodletting set is on the left hand side. Bloodletting was a very old medical practice used by ancient Egypt and Greece. Doctors at the time believed there was 12 quarts of blood when the people has 6 quarts of blood. This case holds all the tools a doctor needs to do a bloodletting. The box is made wood and leather box with tinted paper and is stuffed with flax Wooden Canteen This canteen is in the lower left hand corner and is a rear canteen most soldiers did not use because of awkward shape and size. Charleville Musket In the background there is a musket that is a French Charleville Model 1763 Flintlock Musket. The French Government give guns to USA for fighting the War of Independence. The government had to stamp the firearms as US property to stop people from stealing them. Spontoon Next to the musket is a spontoon which was a standard sidearm for junior officers. It is made from forged steel and wooden pole. Tricorn Hat This hat was worn by Colonel Jonathan Pettibone who was on the 18th Regiment in Connecticut Militia. He was killed at Rye, New York on September 26, 1776. His son wore the hat Jonathan Pettibone Jr. Surgical Kit This surgical kit owned by Charles McKinight Sr. he was born October 10 ,1750. In 1771 he graduated from Princeton where he studied medicine. The box is made from wood and has green felt inside of hit. It has a hand saw and scalpels and other tools. Powder Horn Here is another cattle horn holder it has a map of New York on it. It was used to keep gun powder dry in the field. Pic 12 Conlonal Peter Coast The blue coat is the Continental Army uniform from Colonel Peter Ganesvoort Jr. He was in the 3rd Regiment of New York Continental Line. He was in command of Fort Stanwix, New York in 1777. It is made from superfine blue wool and lined with linen and faced with red trim. The gun on the left is a prototype of the Ferguson rife donated by his grandson. It was one the the 1st breech loading rifles to be used in battle. With the breechblock it dropped the ball in the chamber you just need to add gunpowder. The rifle you can 4 to 6 shots per minute. Pic 13 The gun on the right is an American composite musket that is .75 caliber. This gun is cannibalize from different gun parts from different counties. The barrel is from London, the lock has French marks, the trigger and stock from America. This cannon was a British cannon used at the battle of Saratoga which was in New York state. Benedict Arnold lead the American troops to win the battle. After the French helped with money and supplies which help America beat the British. This battle was a major turning point in the war. Here is an AnsbachBayteuth Regimental flag that was surrendered at Yorktown on October 1781 it was a trophy sent to Continental Congress. The flag is made from white silk damask. There is a lot symbols on the flag. There is a green palm and laurel branch that is tied with a pink ribbon. There is a crown and the letters MZB stands for Markgraf zu Brandenburg with year 1775. This is a modal of a privateer John Peck his frigate named Rattlesnake the real boat built in 1779. The boat was built in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The boat had 20 guns and 85 men to sail. In 1781 the British captured it in 1781 by Royal Navy. Pic 16 Where under the model there is a 16 Ib bar shot made from forged steel it was designed to take out masts and riggings of a ship it looks like a dumbbell. This is a bust of George Washington made from cast plaster. B Jean Antoine Houdon on 1785. This is George Washington Battle Sword and Scabbard it is a hanger-type sword made from forged steel. The grip is green dyed ivory with silver decoration. The scabbard is leather with silver trim. It was made in Fishkill, New York by John Bailey he came from Sheffield, England. The bowl and plate is Chinese Porcelain with enamel decoration of angel from 1785. They are made for The Society of the Cincinnati which was started in 1783. The Society was for descendants of commissioned officers of Revolutionary War This is a Topographical Engineers Uniform the collar and cuffs are made from dark blue velvet and are embroidered in gold with oak leaves and acorns. The Buttons have the USA shield with letters T.E. in old English. The hat to the left is called chapeau it is a black beaver felt. The plume is black swan feathers. The topographical engineers started in March 3, 1813 for them to explore routes for troops. They find roads, rivers, creeks, ravines, hills, woods and villages. On the bottom is Sam Houston hunting knife. The knife is steel with wooden handle. There is an eight point star with Houston name on it. Sam Houston was commander in chief of the armies of Texas. Houston was 1st president of Republic of Texas was a senior to US congress when Texas became a state. Pic 21 Above the knife is Major Lemuel Montgomery .38 flintlock pistols is one of two that Andrew Jackson give to him after the Battle of Talladega. 2,000 US troops went to Creek fort at Talladega on November 9, 1813. The battle only lasted 15 minutes but 300 Creeks dead and 15 US troops dead. Pic 21 Above the gun on the right is a trade tomahawk made for forged steel blade with wooden handle. This was made in Europe and people would trade with the Indians. The gun on the left is a Deringer Model 1814 .54 rife. It was made in Philadelphia it was designed by Henry Deringer. Pic 22 The jacket is an Infantry Private Coat from about 1840. Its made from dark blue cloth lined with white serge and edged with white kerseymere. The hat is made from brown leather. The hat was introduced in 1833 it helped at night to keep of ears earwigs, centipede, cockroaches. Pic 22 On the bottom of the picture are money scales This is the 1st Confederate National flag The flag was know as Stars and Bars the 8 stars represented the confederate states. The flag flew from 1861-1863 the years of confederacy. Here is Major General George McClellan coat worn at Battle of Antietam. This battle is the bloodiest single days in American history. There was more soldiers killed or wounded at Antietam then Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican War and Spanish American War combined. McClellan had 60,000 troops General Lee had 30,000 troops. McClellan captured Lee’s Special Order 99 which said Stonewall Jackson march to Harper’s Ferry with 45,000 troops. McClellan fail to use this information and after Jackson took Harper’s Ferry they moved to Antietam as reinforcements. After the battle McClellan was fired of his command. Pic 24 Below the McClellan coat is his Colt model 1961 Navy Revolver. It was a popular model for ranking Army officers. For the Colt revolver Navy means .36 caliber Army means .44 caliber. On the left there is General William Sherman sword for the Battle of Shiloh. The sword is Model 1850 forged steel sword and gilt brass scabbard. Pic 25 The hat on the right is General Sherman’s campaign hat. The hat is gray wool felt with gold cord trim with US insignia. This is an army hat from 1858 for officers. Sherman was the general that burned Atlanta to the ground and march to the sea. The jacket you see was John Singleton. The jacket is double breasted gray wool shell jacket. Pic 26 the sword to the right is General Philip Sheridan’s made from forged steel with engraved scabbard. The scabbard is engraved with the battles he was in. The chair is the camp chair used by Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War. It is made from wood and velvet seat. This is an Confederate spy glass from the Confederate Signal Corps which used flags, torches, or lights Here is a Service jacket and cap worn by Rear Admiral David Farragut. The jacket is blue wool with gold trim. The cap is wool wit leather from and leather trim with a metal star on it. Admiral Farragut was on flagship Hartford during the Battle of Mobile Bay. During the battle he said famous words “Damn the torpedoes! Full Speed ahead.” He was the 1st person in history to get Admiral in US Navy These two chairs and table is where the civil war ended. This is where Grant and Lee signed the treaty to end the Civil War. The chairs where at Appomattox Courthouse were the surrendered happened. This is Winchester a Morgan house that General Philip Sheridan used. The house became famous for riding from Winchester, Virginia to Cedar Creek Virginia to really troops to victory. The house lived for 20 years and dead in 1878 This medals are going to go from left to right. All the Medals are Congressional Medal of Honor design from 1862-1895. Pic 31 The 1st medal is an awarded to Frank Brownell. He was a private in Company A 11th New York Infantry. He got the medal for avenge killing of his commanding officer in his company and killed James W. Jackson on May 24, 1861. I return the medal and ask to engrave his action on the medal that he wrote himself. Pic 31 The 2nd medal is the 2nd medal for Frank Brownell and this medal at the inscription he had written. “The Congress to Sergt. Frank E. Brownell, 11th N.Y. Vol Inf’y for gallantry in shooting the murderer of Col. Ellsworth at Alexandria, VA, May 24, 1861 Pic 31 The 3rd medal is The Medal of Honor for Sergeant Major Christian Fleetwood he was in 4th US Colored Troops. On September 29, 1864 during the battle of Chaffin’s Farm he took the flag when 2 other flag bears got killed. Pic 31 The 3rd medal is for Daniel Butterfield during the battle of Gaines Mill on June 27, 1862 he got the flag for 3rd Pennsylvania and rallied the troops. Butterfield was the composer of Taps. Here is a naval jumper from 1890 it was made from cotton and has a gunner’s patch on the sleeve. This was worn by enlisted seaman. Pic 36 there are 3 badges starting from the bottom then going up. The bottom badge is a sailmaker ratings badge which show the level of proficiency of that job. Pic 36 The middle badge is gun pointer ratings badge. Pic 36 The top badge is a Machinist Raings badge. Here is a bugle from the USS Maine which was a battleship that was in the bay in Havana, Cuba. February, 15 1898 the USS Maine sank when the gunpowder magazines exploded. They did not know what happened so they blamed the Spanish. 258 Americans died in the sinking. There is also a memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. Here is Colonel Leonard Wood’s jacket and hat. He was assistant surgeon in the Apache Campaign in 1886 and was giving Medal of Honor. By 1904 he was Army Chief of Staff of President William Howard Taft. Pic 38 below the jacket is a Colt 1892 revolver .38 caliber. The gun was owned by Captain Allyn Capron who was killed during the Spanish American War on June 24, 1898. He was part of the Rough Riders. Pic 38 to the right is a Model 1896 KragJorgensen carbine .30 caliber rifle. This is a type of rifle carried by the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry the Rough Riders. Here is a coat of Captain Charles Gridley who was the captain of USFS Olympia which was in the Battle of Manila Bay. The battle was on May 1, 1898 US Navy destroyed or captured Spanish ships without damage to there boats. This is a buffalo skin coat made from a buffalo killed by Buffalo Bill. The coat was given to 2nd lieutenant Albert C. Dalton Company A Infantry by Captain J.B. Irvine. Here is a M1872 Cavalry Sergeant full dress uniform. It is made from blue wool with gold color buttons. The pants are sky blue wool and has yellow strip on side. In 1866 that established 2 cavalry and 4 infantry African American units. The 9th and 10th Cavalry where station on American frontier and fought Cheyenne and Comanche they called them Buffalo Soldiers. Buffalo Soldiers were giving difficult people such as Geronimo, Sitting Bull, Victoria, Lone Wolf, Billy the Kid, Pancho Villa. This buckskin coat was worn by George Custer who was Lieutenant Colonel of 7th US Cavalry in the Dakotas. This one was donated by his wife in 1912. He dead June 25, 1876 during the Battle of Little Big Horn fighting the Sioux and Cheyenne warriors. Pic 34 The gun left to the coat is a M1873 Springfield Carbine .45 caliber. These guns were 1st used by 7th Cavalry at the Battle of Little Big Horn. Pic 34 The revolver at the bottom of coat is a Smith & Wesson found loaded at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1883. This revolver is .45 caliber made from 1875-1878 just 9,000 made. In the back left is a Yeoman female uniform donated by Gertrude French Howalt. During WWI 11,000 women was in the Navy because they need bodies. They did these jobs secretarial, clerical jobs, telegrapher, draftsman, translator, mess attendant, ship camouflage designers, recruiting agents. In the back right is a Doughboy uniform this was the uniform for the enlisted soldiers. The rumor that the uniform was doughy color that they got called doughboys. Pic 40 The gun the Doughboy is holding is a Springfield M1903 .30 Caliber rife with bayonet. Over 1 million rifles were made for WWI. This was stranded issue for Army during WWI. Pic 40 The gas mask you see on Doughboy uniform is made from rubber and fabric with straps to put It on your face. The filter has a metal canister with coconut charcoal, sodalime, cotton pads. The dog on the table is Stubby and he was a war hero that served in 17 battles. He was also the 1st dog to given rank by US Armed Forces. He was part of the 102nd Infantry 26th Yankee Division. He was smuggled over to France and was able to stay when he give a dog salute. On the front lines he save his unit from a gas attack when people where sleeping. He was good at finding injuries men between trenches. He found German spies and attacked them until people came. He did a good job lifting moral of the troops. The bird on the table is Cher Ami a black check carrier pigeon 1 of 600 birds the US Army Signal Corps used to delivered important messages. Pic on the right you see and prosthetic arm it is made from wood and metal joints. There was a lot of troop that need prosthetic after the war. The Liberty 12 Model A Engine was make for WWI is a 12 cylinder liquid cooled engine that had dual ignition. It had 420 horsepower run at 700 rpm. There was 20,478 engines made for WWI. Car companies like Packard, Lincoln, Ford, General Motors, Nordyke and Marmon made them. Here is Werner von Blomberg ceremonial baton it has Nazi swastikas and German national eagles on blue velvet. He was Minister of Defense, Minster of War, Commander in Chief of Army. The gun on the right is a Japanese Arisaka Rife with Bayonet. It was invented by Colonel Nariakira Arisaka. He was part of the commission in the 1890s to make a new rifle to replace the Murata. This gun is stranded issues for Japanese troops. The gun to the right is a German MP40 or called Maschinenpistole .40 Submachine Gun of shot 9mm rounds at 500 rounds per second. There was 1 million made from 1940-1944. Here is a Nazi flag that became the symbol of Nazi party on August 7, 1920. The red means social idea of the movement. White means nationalistic idea of the movement. The swastika is the struggle for victory of the Aryan man. Here is the Japanese flag during WWII Japanese soldiers were given flags with names of family and prayers and inspirational messages. They kept the flag with them at all times. The helmet is M1938 tanker’s helmet made by Wilson Athletic Co. These helmets were just modified football helmets. In the middle of the picture is a M1 Rocket Launcher a 60 mm also know as a Bazooka. It was used as anti tank weapon. The circle thing on the bottom is a German model 43 antitank mine or a Tellermine, It had one pound of TNT it was buried in the ground. It took 350 pounds to set off this mine. The gun in the case is US M3 submachine gun a .45 caliber. This called was also called grease gun because the way it looks. This gun is full auto only. The jacket in the case is a flying jacket of George Gay the sole survivor of Torpedo Squadron Eight form USS Hornet. All the planes got shot down but George Gay was pulled out the water and was the only one to live. The object to the right is type B4 but it was called Mae West. Mae West was a sex symbol for WWII troops. On the top left is a US M2 Mortar a 60mm. This motor fired 3 different types of rounds high explosive, smoke round, illumination round. On bottom left is a M1918A@ Browning automatic rifle there was a buffer spring in the butt of the gun to reduced recoil and helped with firing accuracy and endurance. It could fired 300 to 650 rpm. It had a folding bipod and flash hider. On the top right is a US M2A1 flamethrower and was very destructive. There was 2 tanks one had thick gasoline the other had compressed gas. The gun in the back in a US M1 Grand rifle .30 caliber. General George Patton said “In my opinion the M1 rifle is the greatest battle implement ever devised. On the bottom right is a field telephone model EE8A made by American Electric. The phone is in a leather case and a magneto crank. Here is a Navy uniform from WWII for enlisted personal. The white hat was called Dixiecup because it looked like a Dixiecup. The blue helmet on talk right is a Navy talker’s helmet. The helmet is made from steel and is blue gray color. The helmet is bigger to fit over microphone and headphones. The binoculars to the left are German Dragon binoculars. The gun to the left is a Browning M1919A4 light machine gun .30 caliber. This gun could be mounted on M2 tripod or on armored vehicles. There was 439,000 made during WWII. The gun in the case is a German Walther P38 pistol a 9mm. This gun replaced the Luger pistol from WWI. This was standard issue for WWII. It this case are some winter uniforms that helped the troops stay warm. There is a wool overcoat and wool hood with a cotton liner. There is also wool mittens that had a trigger finger so gunners could still fire their guns. The purple medal is the Purple Heart which is awarded to soldiers who are wounded by enemies. This medal is Edward C. Morse you dead on USS Arizona on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. These are mechanics coveralls which was one of the most important jobs of the war. They caught everything running and in working order. Here is a Navy nurse uniform jacket. During WWII 14,000 women served as nurses. This is a American Red Cross uniform made from cotton it was worn by Marabeth Storrs Finn . By the end of 1945 there was 7.5 million volunteers and 39,000 paid staff who did services during the war. They served 16 million military troops. The American people raised $784 million for the Red Cross. Here is a Women Air force Service Pilots (WASP) battle jacket that was worn by Ruth Lindley who was in class 43W5. This is warm weather gear from the Korean War this is Model 1941. In Korea the weather is very hot and humid in the summer with temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. There is a Bell UH-1 Iroquois or the Huey Helicopter This is a M-1 rifle that was used at Kent State University on May 4, 1970. On this date there was protest against the Vietnam War and 28 National Guard troops and they fired for 13 seconds. There was 4 students dead, 9 wounded. There is a Bell UH-1 Iroquois or the Huey Helicopter this is one of the most iconic objects of the Vietnam war. There was 4,000 used during the war. This one was in Vietnam during 1966 with 173rd Assault Helicopter Company called Robin Hoods. There is a Bell UH-1 Iroquois or the Huey Helicopter Here is part of the Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961 a Sunday night East German Government closed the border of East and West Berlin. The wall was 12 ft tall and 103 miles long. The wall was up for 28 years and 400-800 dead trying to escape. November 9, 1989 citizens on both sides began demolish the wall. The uniform is from US Marine Corps, The shirt in the middle is from US Navy. The uniform on the right is from George Petersen all these uniforms are from the Vietnam War. On the left is a Vietcong uniform. The Vietcong were everyday people that were guerrilla fighters. There uniforms was made to make it difficult to know who are the enemy. They took orders from the North Vietnam Communist. The uniform on the right is a North Vietnam Army. Here are some of the items that people left at the Vietnam Wall Memorial. The uniform on the left is a woodland pattern camouflage. This was worn by General Colin Powell during Operations Desert Shield and Storm. The uniform on the right is tan and brown pattern or called chocolate chip. It was worn by Melissa Rathbun-Nealy part of 233rd Transportation Company. She was a POW from January 31, 1991- March 4, 1991. These orange beams where from the World Trade Center from September 11, 2001 Here is Audie Murphy Eisenhower jacket he was one of the most decorated soldiers of all-time. He also wrote a book and was in movies.
