The Gettelman Brewery was the down the street neighbor of the Miller Brewery. George Schweickhart started the brewery in 1856 after getting 3 acres of land in Milwaukee. They were not a competitor to Miller Brewing though. The focus of the brewery was focused on craft beer production. An early “microbrewery”. Gettelman He built a 48’x100’ brewery and a 48’x60’ vault where the beer was left to ferment. In 1876 Adam Gettelman the founder’s son in law bought the brewery and became the owner. In 1961, the brewery was sold to the Miller Brewery down the street for over $1 million. The Gettelman Brewery was struggling due to a union strike and the new, increased union wages. The Gettelman and Miller Breweries had a good working relationship because how close they were geographical. Miller like the brewery for new brands and it would be easy to run. Milwaukee's Best was a Gettelman beer that they made.
